About This Spot

Stepping into Cargo Coffee, nestled along East Washington Avenue in Madison, you immediately sense a rhythm that blends comfort with a lively local pulse. It’s the kind of spot where warmth meets a subtle buzz—soft conversations weave through the air, occasionally stirred by the strum of a guitar or the gentle beat of an open mic night. Here, the pace encourages both pause and quiet excitement, a place that feels welcoming whether you’re slipping in for a morning pick-me-up or lingering into the afternoon.

The atmosphere balances thoughtfully between spaciousness and intimacy. Inside, sunlight filters in, lighting up cozy corners and the expansive seating upstairs, where people connect over the rich aroma of brewing coffee. The friendly baristas call out orders with a smile, fostering an unforced sense of community. It’s clear this café isn’t just about coffee—it’s a gathering ground where familiar faces and first-timers come together in shared moments.

What stands out at Cargo isn’t just the well-crafted cup, from a bold iced coffee to the creamy mocha latte, but the way the menu feels like an extension of the neighborhood’s character. There’s a comforting charm in choosing a croissant sandwich or a fresh wrap made with thoughtful ingredients that feel homemade, enough to satisfy a midday hunger without rushing the experience. And for those seeking a different kind of refreshment, the selection occasionally surprises with local brews, inviting a slow sip alongside easy conversation.

Music softly spills over from a live session or an impromptu jam, echoing the café’s support of Madison’s creative pulse. This lively yet unpretentious backdrop makes Cargo Coffee more than just a stop for caffeine—it’s a space where moments unfold naturally, whether that’s catching a few pages of your book, sharing a bite with a friend, or simply soaking in the steady hum of a city’s heartbeat.

We were visiting from Colorado and picked this to grab a quick drink until we could check in our hotel. It was such a great space to hang for a little bit. I had a spicy Chai that was perfect. There happen to be a music jam happening and it was so nice to sit and listen. Love how much they support local live music. The staff was very friendly. Great space!

The coffee tasted strong and the atmosphere was so vibrant. It is a great place to take a break. There are two bathrooms.

I like this little coffee spot. They have wraps and small bites to order with your coffee. We came on the weekend and they were starting an open mic. The service was fast and parking isn’t bad at all if you get a spot in the garage. They also have additional seating area upstairs.

One of the coolest coffee shops I've been to. I often look for those rare shops that you just know an owner takes so much pride in. If in Madison, this is the place. Cool atmosphere, live music when I was there and without doubt great coffee, drinks and sandwiches. Put this on your I NEED TO CHECK THAT PLACE OUT list.

Cute little cafe coffee shop on East Washington. Bigger than might meet the eye at first glance. Great variety of coffee flavor syrups and they had the milk and simple syrup out which I always appreciate. I also got a muffin and a sandwich which were both really great. Would go back for sure.

Best neighborhood coffee shop in downtown and it’s not even close. The food is so reasonably priced and the service is always quick

Really cool aviation themed coffee spot with plenty of space, seating, outlets, and a huge menu. I was there during a nice music jam session too which was nice. Located in the heart of Madison. Really great berry smoothie! Highly recommend!
